1. Tutorial: your first hour

1. Create a champion. On the title screen, pick a name (3-12 letters) and a password, then press Create account. Your champion and everything you own is stored on the server, so you can log in from any browser.
2. Escape the prison. You wake in a locked cell. Walk to the bars on the east side of your cell. The guard left the prison key on his table just outside. Click the key to grab it through the bars (you can pick up anything within reach). Then click the cell door to unlock it.
3. Sneak past the guard. A sleeping orc guards the corridor. He is much stronger than you, but slow, and he will wake up if you get close. Run past him along the edge of the room and head east. A bat lives near the exit. It's weak enough to punch to death (hold F), but you can also just run. Walk through the cave mouth to escape.
4. Your first gold. You arrive in Dawn Meadow. Punch bees and rabbits: they barely fight back and often drop a gold coin. Just walk over gold a monster dropped to scoop it up (click other items, or press G, to pick them up). You need 3 gold.
5. Meet Maren. Follow the path north to the torch-lit gateway at the top of the meadow and walk through it into the town of Emberhold. Maren's Hall is the red-roofed building in the north west. Walk into its door. Inside, press Enter, type quest and press Enter again. Maren gives you a club (it goes straight into your hand if it's empty) and sends you to Hollis.
6. Learn the Life skill. Leave town through the west gate into Westmarch Fields, go south into the Southern Fields, and find Hollis's straw-roofed hut. Inside, say life. She takes 3 gold and teaches you Life, which raises your maximum hit points as you fight. Return to Maren and say quest to hand in your first quest.
7. Keep going. Maren's next quests send you after bats, then brigands. Finishing the brigand quest teaches you the Sword skill. From there, talk to everyone and say quest. Every skill in the game is unlocked by someone's questline.
Your health regenerates slowly on its own, and once you have been out of combat for about 8 seconds you start mending: several times faster, about a minute from empty to full. Fight close to town at first, and walk away from a fight when you are low. Most early monsters are slower than you.

2. Controls

KeyAction
W A S D / arrowsMove. Hold two keys to move and face diagonally (diagonals are faster: full speed on both axes).
Space / FSwing both hands. Hold to keep swinging. Attacking doesn't slow you down, and you can keep walking and turning mid-swing.
Left clickSwing your main (right) hand. Clicking an item, door or person interacts with it instead.
Right click / RSwing your off (left) hand: a second weapon, or your fist if it's empty. Each hand swings on its own timing, and the off hand is about a third slower.
Hold ShiftLock your facing while you move. It also picks your swing style (see combat).
KOpen the keybind editor. Every action (including each bag slot) can have up to three keys or mouse buttons, and they're saved to your account. A key can be shared by several actions: pressing it does all of them, and the editor marks shared keys with +n.
EnterOpen the chat box. Everyone in your zone sees what you say, and NPCs answer keywords. If you were walking, you keep walking the same way while you type.
Click an itemPick it up (or buy it, in a shop). G picks up the nearest item in front of you.
Click a door or NPCOpen the door (if you have its key) or make the NPC greet you.
QDrop what is in your hand. In a shop, dropping an item sells it.
1-9 or click a bag slotUse it: equip weapons and armour, drink potions, read scrolls. Building materials are dropped in front of you.
Shift + click a weaponEquip it in your off hand. With two weapons your attacks alternate hands.
Right-click any slotDrop that item.
BBuild mode (also /build): each keypress moves exactly one voxel, and items drop right in front of your feet.
Tab / HCycle the side panel tabs / show the help overlay (its Commands tab lists every command).
/Start typing a command.
RRespawn after dying, or enter the world again after camping or a disconnect.

Commands

Press / to type a command. Commands are never spoken aloud. Anything else you type is said out loud, and NPCs answer keywords: say help to anyone to hear what they understand (some keep a secret or two).

Dying, camping and more than one account

When you die, press R to respawn. Camp (the button, or /camp) leaves the world but keeps you logged in: press R to come back. Leaving takes a moment: 3 seconds in town or inside a building, 12 seconds in a zone next to a safe one, and more the further you are from safety, up to 30 seconds. Stand still while you wait; moving or attacking stops it, and you can still be attacked. Log out waits the same way, and closing the game leaves your champion standing in the world just as long, so you can't escape a fight by quitting. Every browser tab can play its own account, and the login screen remembers accounts you have used. Up to 2 accounts can play at once from one connection; accounts with a membership don't count toward that.

Keeping your account safe

In Settings → Account you can add an email address (optional, never shown to anyone). Once you confirm it with the link we send, Forgot your password? on the login screen emails you a reset link, and you get a note whenever your password or login settings change. You can also turn on two-factor login: scan the QR code with an authenticator app on your phone (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, 1Password...), and from then on logging in also needs the 6-digit code it shows. Keep the recovery codes you're given somewhere safe: each one logs you in once if you lose your phone.

PvP and muting

Champions can only fight each other when both have PvP on (/pvp or the Social tab), and never in town, buildings or vaults. Champions with PvP on have a red name with ⚔. Turning PvP off takes 10 seconds out of PvP combat. Mute anyone from the Social tab or with /mute name: you won't see their chat, whispers or speech bubbles.

Settings

The Settings button has visibility aids that only affect your screen: make items on the ground, or creatures, blink now and then so they're easy to spot.

Seeing through trees and walls

Anything hidden behind trees, walls or roofs shows through as an outlined silhouette: gold for items, red for hostile monsters, pale for harmless critters, blue for champions and yellow for townsfolk. You can still click hidden items to pick them up. Flying creatures cast a ring on the ground with a dotted line up to them, so you can tell how high they are. Outlines are only as bright as the light where the hidden thing stands, so in the dark they are faint; at night creatures and items in the open stay a little brighter than the ground around them.

Playing on a phone or tablet

Touch controls appear automatically. Your left thumb steers with the joystick (it snaps to the 8 directions). On the right, hold ⚔ to swing both hands and ✋ for just your off hand (in Settings you can make ⚔ swing only your main hand), and tap Stance to lock your facing so moving picks the swing style. Pick up grabs the nearest item. Tap anything in the world (an item, a door, a person) to use it, or empty ground to swing. 💬 opens chat and ☰ slides out the menu with your gear, skills and quests. Long-press a bag slot to drop it. It plays upright or sideways (the view takes the shape of your screen), and you can add the game to your home screen to play full-screen.

3. Combat and voxel hitboxes

Everything in Lightseek is built out of voxels (little cubes), and combat uses those voxels directly. When you swing, your weapon's voxels sweep through an arc in front of you. You only hit a monster if those voxels actually touch the monster's voxels. The same goes for monsters hitting you.

Swing styles

How you move at the moment you attack decides which swing you make:

StyleHowWhat it does
ChopStanding stillAn overhead strike in front of the swinging hand. Hits hardest (+15% damage).
ThrustMoving (or moving forward while holding Shift)A lunging jab straight ahead with the longest reach and +8% critical chance. Great for running attacks.
SweepHolding Shift and moving sidewaysA wide horizontal arc toward that side that hits everything in it, with any weapon, for 15% less damage.
Rising strikeHolding Shift and backing awayStarts low (catches rabbits, snakes and other small things) and knocks the target back, briefly dazing it. Perfect for kiting.

Reading the numbers

ShownMeaning
(7)Regular hit. Reduced by the target's defense.
[7]Solid hit. Ignores defense. More likely as your weapon skill rises.
{10}Critical hit: 1.5× a solid hit. Axes crit more often.
((14))Backstab (dagger skill): double damage.
(+)Blocked by a shield.
(-)Missed. This happens often if you use a weapon above your skill level. Items marked ! in your bag need more skill.

Hover over a monster to see its name and challenge level. The colour tells you how it compares to your Life level: grey is far beneath you (almost no XP), white is a fair fight, gold is tough and red is deadly. Valuable loot is announced when it drops, sparkles, and stays on the ground for 10 minutes instead of 5. A boss that loses track of you goes home, heals, calms down and calls off its reinforcements, so every attempt starts fresh.

Monster health bars appear over their heads once they are hurt, but only while your Life level is within 5 of the monster's challenge level. If you can't see the bar, the monster is far below you and gives almost no experience.

4. Skills and leveling

There is no character level. Instead, each skill levels up separately when you use it, and there is no level cap. Every level needs more experience than the last.

Challenge level XP falloff

5. Quests

Say quest to anyone who might need help. You can hand in a finished quest the same way. Your active quests and progress are shown in the Quests tab. Kill quests count every kill you helped with.

6. Shops and trading

Every shopkeeper has their own building. Walk in through the door.

7. Items and building

Items you drop keep their voxel shape and fall with gravity. They rest wherever any voxel is supported, and they are solid. You can stand on them, and you can step up anything up to 3 voxels high. Stack things to build stairs and walls, or anything you can think of. Pulling out an item from the bottom of a pile makes everything resting on it fall.

Stairs: drop a stone block, step onto it, face forward, drop two more blocks in front, and keep going. Each block is 3 voxels tall, exactly one step.

8. The world

Neighbouring outdoor zones connect through a gateway in the middle of their shared edge, marked by a pair of torch-lit posts where the path leaves the zone (in Emberhold, the town gates). The rest of every border is sealed by forest, cliffs or walls. Caves, dungeons and buildings are entered through their doors and cave mouths: just walk up to a door anywhere across its width. The Map tab shows the zones you have discovered.

The Endless Well lies in the far south-eastern desert, in the Ruins of Ashkar. It has no bottom. Each depth is 6 challenge levels harder than the last, and every fifth depth has a Warden. It's meant for veteran champions who have run out of things to fight.

Sound

Every sound is made on the fly by your browser, with no recordings. Listen for the whoosh of each swing (heavier for axes and maces). Every blow sounds like what met what: a blade slicing flesh, a mace crunching bone, a sword ringing off armour or scraping sparks from a stone wall, a fist thudding on wood. Critical hits add a bright ring. People grunt when hurt, each in their own voice; you can pick yours in Settings, and everyone nearby hears it. Wolves yelp, bats squeak, skeletons rattle, golems grind and shades moan. Footsteps change with the ground under your feet. Each region has its own music, which softens at night and picks up drums when you fight, and bosses have their own theme. Birds sing by day and crickets chirp at night; caves drip, fires crackle and ponds lap at their banks. The sound starts after your first click or key press. Adjust the volumes in Settings, or press M to mute.

9. Death, rest and recovery

10. The bank: vaults and guilds

The Bank of Emberhold stands just north of the fountain. Ottilie the banker looks after a vault for every champion. Open the Bank tab in the side panel to manage it.
